A Journey of friendship

March 31, 2008 / by Remnance

College is a difficult journey that most don’t travel. I find myself wondering why I’m taking all these challenging classes that have little to do with what I am going to be doing once I graduate. Classes in which I need to take in order to get my degree. In the whole scope of my schooling nothing that I have learned is going to waist. What I learn in these classes broadens my horizons and to not take life so lightly. As a student, its difficult living with very little to live off of. Trying to support myself threw college. But, if I choose not to suffer a little now the rest of my life I will be suffering. Living life day by day without the support of my friends and family would be horrible. I would not be where I am today trying to do better for myself if it was not for their encouragement.

In the novel A Question of Power written by Bessie Head. Elizabeth’s “Journey into hell” was a horrible  experience but what she when threw was not too much different. She had friends to help her get travel through those times of despair. Even when she was on the brink of a mental breakdown. They were there to support her.

Elizabeth’s staying busy kept her mind occupied and help boost her spirits. If she did not stay active she would end up going insane from the mental breakdown. Elizabeth was a gardener which surrounded her with positive things. The growth of the plants lifted her spirits, and the people who she worked with were flourishing. She grew Cape gooseberry in which where very therapeutic; the accomplishment and knowing that only she could grow the berries in such arid soil of Botswana and make a delicious, healthy jam out of the berries. Elizabeth and the Cape Gooseberry’s; neither are native to the region and have adapted to the new environment, but in the end just like Elizabeth the Cape Gooseberry flourished and was her “lever out of hell.

Elizabeth’s journey through life was at its lowest point. She was about to lose everything. With the help from friends like Tom, she turned out just fine. I feel that without Toms support Elizabeth would not have got threw the state of mind that she was in. Tom still cared for Elizabeth even though she did what she did.

Elizabeth was never alone even threw death. She had friends that cared for her when she was going through the most difficult times of her life. The friends that she made will be with her for eternity. It just shows that life is much easier with someone like our friends and family to help keep us motivated and watch us grow.
